日本ではとっくに８ミリフィルムが製造中止になった。
映画では時代の流れですっかりデジタルが主流になっている。
しかし、今もって８ミリカメラでフィルムスケッチをしている私にとって、
ルミエール兄弟の『初めての映画』がとても懐かしく恋しい。
私にはフィルムというオブジェ感覚が好ましい。
幼な心をくすぐるように、小さなフィルムを光にかざしてみる世界は宝石のように美しい。
カメラや映写機は博物館に飾られ、残っている中古は次から次へと壊れゆく。
私はいつ消えてなくなるとも知れない８ミリフィルムで最后のロマンチシズムを撮りたいと思った。
高校生のとき、初めて読んだアルチュール・ランボオの詩。
今もってその美しい感覚に魅せられている。
最后の映画はランボオのひかりを掴えたいと思った。
2015年の雨のクリスマスにランボオの生誕地シャルルヴィルを訪ねた。
そこからフィルムスケッチが始まった。
フィルムは２４コマで１秒。
そのひとコマひとコマを写真を撮るように意識していくと、
時間という瞬間の連続に、生きること、死ぬこと、を改めて感じる。
日本の漢字は「儚さ」と書いて「はかなさ」と読ませる。
人はつくづく、その美のはかなさを感じながらその瞬間を生きているのだと思う。

On Les Illuminations
It has been a long time since 8 mm film became discontinued in Japan.
In the film world, digital is now the prevalent mainstream.
However, for me, who still makes film sketches with an 8 mm camera,
I miss very much the texture of the Lumière brothers 'My First Film'.
I like the sense of the film as a tactile object.
As if to tickle my childhood heart, the world I see when I hold a small film up to the light is as beautiful as a jewel.
Alas today, those 8mm cameras and projectors are displayed in museums,
and the remaining second-hand machines break down one after another.
I wanted to capture the last romanticism with 8 mm film, which could disappear at any moment in this digital age.
In high school, I first read poems by Arthur Rimbaud.
I am still fascinated by their beautiful sensations.
For my last film, I wanted to capture the light of Rimbaud.
On a rainy Christmas Day in 2015,
I visited Charleville, Rimbaud's birthplace.
That is where my film sketches began.
A film has 24 frames for 1 second.
As I became aware of each frame as if I were taking a photograph,
I felt anew the sensation of living and dying in the chain of instant time.
The Japanese kanji character for 'transience' is written as ‘hakana-sa 儚さ', which consists of two characters, a man 人 and a dream 夢.
I cannot but feel that people are inevitably living in the transient moment while perceiving the transience of beauty in each moment.
