During the exhibition period,

Japanese artist Isao Yamada will turn the entire gallery

into his atelier!

This is his first solo exhibition of this kind in Europe,

encompassing his multi-faceted expressions in differnt media.

Crossing the borders of film, painting and calligraphy,
Isao Yamada is known for constructing a unique world of Japanese art.
In his paintings and manga, inspirations from Japanese literature mix with mermaids,
unicorns and other elements of fantasy.
The full range of Yamada's artistic universe will be on display,
including an ongoing installation of his renowned 8 mm films.

During the exhibition period, Isao Yamada will be accepting commissions for original calligraphy,
creating singular artworks based on names, zodiac signs and other texts, in both Japanese and Western script.

【Brief Biography】

Isao Yamada(1952-)

Noted Japanese film director Isao Yamada, whose most recent release is the feature-length Shutorumu undo Doranku (Sturm und Drang, 2014), has been recognized for his art films since 1977. His work has been featured at Cannes and other festivals, while Yamada has been the focus of retrospectives in Japan, France, Germany and Sweden. In addition to his work in cinema, Yamada is also known for his work in manga, painting and graphic design. His recent manga include ‘Tawamure (à la folie)’ and a graphical art series of ‘Ningyo (Siréne)’ in micro-pen-work. His calligraphic font is know as ‘Yamada-moji’ which has been appointed for a number of publications and advertisement posters.

Books about him and his works include Yume no Fiirudo (Field of Dreams: 1992), Hoshino Fragumento (Fragmentation of Star: 2003), Yamavica Uchuu-gaku (Yamavica Cosmology: 2014).

Mostly working with 8mm film, Dir. Yamada is acclaimed for his poetical interpretation of phenomena, capturing momental beauty and instant ephemerality in the world of man and nature. Given the sensually aesthetic treatment of subtlety and tranquility, his films often float between reality and dream. His films are called ‘Yamavicascope’, characterised by their intentional focus on non-digital optical sensation.

ストックホルム旧市街に、山田勇男のアトリエが出現！

文字・絵画・映像という表現の境界(あわい)を横断しながら、《ヤマヴィカ宇宙》といえる独自の世界観を呈示し続ける奇才山田勇男。その作品群を多面的に紹介する欧州初の個展です。言葉を魅惑的に象(かたど)るレタリング作品、人魚や一角獣など幻想モチーフや日本文学に触発された絵画を展示するほか、100本以上の８ミリ映画から選りすぐりの映像を鑑賞いただくミニ・シアター・インスタレーションを開設。上映会とトークも開催します。

　期間中は、ギャラリーをアトリエとして、山田氏が作品を制作しています。この機会に、お名前、干支・星座をはじめ、お好きな言葉、オリジナル絵文字の注文を承ります。是非お運びのうえ、ご高覧くださいますよう。

【山田勇男プロフィール】

1952年、北海道生まれ。

74年、演劇実験室天井桟敷に入団。寺山修司監督作品映画の美術・衣装デザインを担当。77年、札幌にて漫画家・故湊谷夢吉らと銀河画報社映画倶楽部を結成。稲垣足穂の「一千一秒物語」をモチーフに製作した処女作『スバルの夜』以来、現在まで８mmフィルム作品を中心に100本を越えるアート・フィルムを制作。気配・影などの “ゆらぎ”、そして夢と現実の“はざま”を写し取る、詩的な映像世界を紡いでいる。独自の世界観を持った映像は国内外で評価が高く、フランス（パリ、ブザンソン）、ドイツ（オーバーハウゼン映画祭:http://www.kurzfilmtage.de/en/festival/looking-back/more/）、スウェーデン（ストックホルム現代美術館）などで特集上映が組まれ、作品は海外の美術館や大学に収蔵されている。

劇場映画の監督作品は、『アンモナイトのささやきを聞いた』（1992, カンヌ国際映画祭招待）、つげ義春原作『蒸発旅日記』(2003)、『シュトルム・ウント・ドランクッ』（2014）。

一方、漫画家、装丁家としての顔も持ち、「ヤマヴィカ製文字」によって独特な世界観を紡ぎ出す。

山田勇男についての書籍は『夢のフィールド』（1992）『星のフラグメント』(2003)、『ヤマヴィカ宇宙学』（虹霓社篇：2014）自身の著作には漫画集『戯れ』(2008)、細密ペン画集『人魚』(2013) などがある。
